A LUNAR ECLIPSE occurs when the moon passes behind the earth so that the earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moonare aligned exactly, or very closely so, with the Earth in the middle.


When the Moon is completely immersed within the Earth's dark umbral shadow, scientists call this totality. During this eclipse, totality will last just over 100 minutes—longer than any total lunar eclipse since July 16th, 2000, which lasted for 107 minutes (close to the maximum possible duration).
