the giant machine, takes over the need for human labour/human thought
attempt to rebel against, but machine surpases human intelligence
put all reliance into machine, no backup, in space, hal is in control of everything

other points - both are criticism of their time.. (?)
advancement of technology leads to downfall (in this scene specifically)
